FED: Government determined to keep Burchett out
CANBERRA, Jan 1 AAP - Wilfred Burchett, the maverick Australian journalist, created
new problems for the government of John Gorton by his persistent efforts to get back into
the country, 1969 cabinet documents reveal.
The papers, released by the Australian Archives under the 30-year rule, show the government
conceded it really couldn't keep him out, despite his advocacy of the communist cause
and support for the Viet Cong against whom Australian troops were then fighting in Vietnam.
